Valley Gurl Series: A September Baby!

How many birthdays are in September? Well, mine just happens to be in September! I am indeed a September baby, but I was born at the very end of the month when things are really starting to feel like spooky season. You know what’s even crazier? I was not supposed to be born in September at all. In fact, I wasn’t even supposed to be born in October. Nope, I was supposed to be born in November, around Thanksgiving time! I was told I was eight weeks early. I was supposed to be born around the time the Disney Pixar animated movie Toy Story came out. No wonder I love that movie so much. We are connected somehow!

Yes, I was born on a Tuesday morning on the 26th of September in the north valley at Northridge Hospital in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, CA at 4:58 a.m. It was cool and cloudy my parents told me, and I had to stay in an incubator for a few weeks or more. My family came and visited me all the time. Throughout the years of growing up, I received nothing but love and care. There were some ups and downs throughout my childhood, but I was raised very well. And look at me now. All is good.

BEING A SEPTEMBER BABY:

Being born around the month of September is kind of an oddball experience. The reason is because when you’re growing up, September means one big thing: school starts. It doesn’t matter what grade you’re in or what type of schooling you’re doing, everyone is getting ready for a new school year around fall. To me, September still feels like the beginning of a new year because I was in school for so long, and that includes college. I graduated in 2022, but here I am today and I still kind of think that way. September rolls around and my brain goes, “Okay, new year, new school year, let’s go!”

Then there’s the whole birthday situation. You start school, you’re making new friends, and then your birthday happens. But you’re not close enough to these new friends yet to invite them to your birthday party. Then, as the school year goes on, you get closer to them and suddenly you’re thinking, “Man, I should have invited them to my birthday!” Then the following year comes around and who knows what happens? Maybe you got close, maybe you didn’t, or maybe the friendship went in a completely different direction. So that’s kind of one of the little hiccups of being a September baby.

THE SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAY & SCHOOL CUTOFF:

Another thing about being born in September is that you can sometimes end up being either one of the older or younger students in your graduating class, depending on the school cutoff where you live. If I had graduated with the Class of 2013, I would have been one of the youngest. But I graduated with the Class of 2014 because I got held back in second grade, which eventually made me one of the older students in my high school class. And honestly, I don’t mind it at all. It’s just interesting to think about how birthdays, school cutoff dates and the year you start school can all affect what graduating class you end up in. People born around June through September can sometimes fall right around that cutoff depending on where they live. Nowadays, there is also a lot more awareness about school readiness and when children should start school, so it’s something parents think about more than they used to.

VIRGO, LIBRA, or HALLOWEEN BABY?

Another thing about being born in September is that I was born in late September, so I view myself as a Libra. I have a lot of those Libra mannerisms, at least in my opinion! But I could have been a Virgo if I had been born earlier in September, and I could have been born in October and been a full-on Libra. So, I guess I landed right in the middle of everything.

And then there’s Halloween. September is basically sitting right between the end of summer and the beginning of spooky season. Clearly, I have fallen into the Halloween category at this point. Halloween and spooky season have become increasingly popular over the years, and once the internet and social media really started blowing up, it seemed like spooky season started earlier every year, just like Christmas. And honestly, I don’t mind it whatsoever because my birthday is technically about a month before Halloween!

Personally, I love everything about spooky season and fall. I love the flannel and plaid, pumpkin spice everything, Oktoberfest, the changing of the seasons, the music, the movies, tv shows, and all those cozy fall vibes. Of course, being here in California, we don’t get the dramatic fall colors that the East Coast gets. We do get some beautiful colors, but it’s definitely not the same as watching an entire landscape turn orange, red and yellow. Still, there’s something special about that transition. The weather starts changing, the days get a little different, football season is happening, and we’re slowly saying goodbye to baseball. Baseball is my favorite sport, but football is cool too.

SEPTEMBER TO JANUARY:

And then, once my birthday is over, we start moving toward winter, which means my soon-to-be husband’s birthday is coming up.

Fun fact: We are only 100 days apart! We were supposed to be even closer in age. Brandon was supposed to be born on Christmas Day in 1995, while I was supposed to be born around Thanksgiving of 1995. Well, he was ten days late and I was eight weeks early, which somehow resulted in us being 100 days apart. His birthday is January 4th, 1996. So yes, I am about three and a half months older than him. From my birthday to his birthday, it’s basically a very busy stretch of the year for both of us. My birthday, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and then his birthday. It never really stops, but that’s okay. Life isn’t boring!

ENJOY THE JOURNEY:

I am blessed everyday. I am engaged, about to be married to the love of my life who I’ve been with for a little over a decade now and moved out and live on our own, working on our career path , and blessed for new chapters in our lives around us. Blessed to have our parents & family and seeing us grow.

Yes, being born in September has been quite a fun and interesting journey, and I always look forward to it. Having a birthday is your own special day. It’s a day where you can appreciate the fact that you are here. Yes, there are plenty of other people who have the same birthday as you, but you are still you. You are special in your own way. Everyone is their own unique person, and that’s something we all must remember. No one can take anybody’s place because we all have our own identity and our own story. So, enjoy your birthday whenever it may be. Spoil yourself a little. Enjoy your day and enjoy your life. We’re only human, and I know we’re not perfect, but try to be a good person and appreciate the people around you. We’re on this earth for a reason. Life is a journey. Ride the waves, hike the hills, fly through your thoughts, and get through the ups and downs of the roller coaster of life because, at the end of the day, life is a gift. And I’m happy I got here eight weeks early. 🩵🌴
